Hawthorne

Temperature:  40-90 degrees Fahrenheit

Hawthorns are a member of the rose family growing to be four to six feet tall.  Hawthorns are considered to be a shrub. They like to be planted in sunny areas. Your free plant will bloom in May and will produce small clusters of flowers that can be white, red or pink.  Small berries, called haws, sprout after the flowers.  The berries will be red or black when ripe.

Hawthorns can also make a great container plant to put on your patio or deck.  They do not require much maintenance.  Plant them in full sun, water them well and make sure you plant them in soil that is able to drain.  Your free plants will attract many kinds of butterflies and birds.  During the fall months the birds will have a fest with all the berries, just a warning sometimes they are messy eaters.

The best time to prune your Hawthorne will be right after the summer.  Cut back as far as you would like.  Do be careful the Hawthorne plant does have sharp thorns just like a rose bush.

The Hawthorne plant is not only a beautiful plant to have in your garden but there are also some amazing facts that go along with it.  The most fascinating being that today the flowers and leaves from the Hawthorne plant are being used to treat mild to moderate heart failure.  The evidence is being proven time and time again and many health professionals are using this plant to protect against heart disease and to help control high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  I find this so amazing…I want to know who goes around eating plants to find out all of this stuff.

Enjoy your Free Plant!
